Dermal Fillers: Everything you need to know

Full cheeks, smooth skin, plump lips: Some people have them naturally, while others get a little help from their dermatologists with dermal fillers. If you can't quite tell which category a celebrity or someone you know fits into, well, that's the point. The latest injectable treatments are easy to get (if not cheap), long-lasting, and designed for subtlety. They're also perfectly safe, provided you've done your homework and go to a reputable doctor. If you're curious about fillers, these are the things to know before getting pumped up.

From which liquid fillers made of?

First things first: Dermal fillers aren't the same as neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport. The latter type "freezes" muscles to reduce wrinkles, while fillers smooth out skin by filling wrinkles. Collagen used to be a common filler, but these days most fillers, such as Belotero® use hyaluronic acid. Thanks to its ability to store moisture, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving skin a plump, hydrated look.

What is the difference between Belotero® dermal filler and other dermal fillers?

While Belotero® dermal filler is made of the same material (hyaluronic acid) as some other dermal fillers, it has unique properties that allow it to adapt within the skin for soft and even correction. The versatility of the product makes it strong enough to handle deep treatment areas such as nasolabial folds (smile lines around the mouth), yet soft enough to treat more delicate areas such as vertical lip lines (thin lines that appear above the lip line).

How does it work?

Belotero® dermal filler is made of a material called hyaluronic acid or HA. Belotero® dermal filler is an injectable filler that quickly integrates into your skin. Once injected, it instantly smoothes the lines and wrinkles in your face. HA naturally exists as a component of your skin. Because it binds to water, it plumps and fills in wrinkles and folds, allowing immediate and smooth correction.

How soon can you expect the results?

Instantly!

How long does it last?

Individual results may vary, but Belotero® dermal filler may last from about 6 months to up to 2 years.

How is the treatment performed?

Belotero® dermal filler is injected into the skin in a simple, quick procedure using a super-fine needle – it can be done over your lunch hour. Belotero® dermal filler is approved in New Zealand and Australia and has undergone testing in clinical studies to prove its safety.

Are there any side effects?

Just as with any injection, you may experience mild irritation, swelling, itching, redness, bruising or tenderness at the injection site. These side effects typically resolve on their own. If any of these side effects persist, call your healthcare professional immediately.

There is very little to no downtime associated with a Belotero® dermal filler procedure. In fact, most patients return to their normal daily activities right after their visit. Every patient is unique so be sure to discuss your plans with your appearance medicine professional during your consultation.

Though there is absolutely no need to go running out for fillers before you even see your first wrinkle, people are starting treatments younger than ever before. A good dermatologist will explain the ideal treatment plan for you but know that the most natural-looking results may require more than one weight of filler. Cheek Fillers: Everything you need to know

What is Cheekbone enhancement?

Cheekbone enhancement is an effective, non-surgical, and minimally invasive option for those who wish to have more volume in the cheekbone area and enhance their overall facial contour and balance. Because the cheek area is augmented with an injectable dermal filler, the results are more natural, require little downtime, and have a low incidence of side-effects.

Dr Lara Devgan, a New York City plastic surgeon, is a massive proponent of cheekbone sculpting and enhancement, going so far as to state: “In the world of plastic surgeons, cheekbones are thought to represent 70% of facial beauty, and the reason for that is that they give a really pleasing architecture to the face.”  The correct application of hyaluronic acid fillers in cheek contouring and cheek enhancement can dramatically change the appearance of hollow faces and hollow cheeks, add lift and add volume, all of which slowly disappear over time and as we age.

How do dermal fillers help in cheekbone enhancement?

Traditional cheek enhancement treatments are surgical, invasive procedures. Either silicone or fat is implanted into the cheekbone area. Surgical implants are done under general anesthesia with an incision made inside the mouth, through which the implant is inserted. The recovery can be painful and the outcome may not always be as desired.

Recent advances in dermal fillers mean cheeks no longer need surgery to be revitalized. The benefits of cheek fillers are enormous – not only can you avoid surgery, but cheek enhancement fillers can take care of all your concerns, from plumping cheeks and filling in lines, to adding volume where it has been lost, which alleviates sagging skin.

How long does the treatment take?

Cheek sculpting and enhancement treatment times vary, depending on your needs and goals. Typically this cosmetic procedure takes about 20-30 minutes. Cheek filler costs also vary, again depending on your goals and desired outcomes.

A topical, local anaesthetic is used before cheek fillers are injected. This means there is minimal to no pain at all.

Are there any side effects?

Mild redness and swelling may appear immediately after the procedure, but will subside within several days. Occasionally, localized bruising is possible. However, most patients are able to return to work and daily activities immediately after cheek enhancement. As with any cosmetic procedure, cheek enhancement aftercare involves certain steps that your cosmetic nurse will discuss with you during your consultation.

How much do they cost?

The exact receipt depends on the level of the practitioner you're seeing, as well as how much filler is needed to help your cheeks reach their peak. Generally, the final tab can fall between $1,000 and $4,000 total for an average-sized female face.

How long do the results last?

Permanent fillers are to be avoided – they often bring permanent problems. We use long-lasting, yet temporary, dermal fillers for cheek enhancement and sculpting, which means that you can expect your results to last about 18 months – 2 years. Because we use temporary fillers, we are also able to tweak the results by dissolving some areas if needed to obtain your desired results.
